Korean Calligraphy Workshop: Writing Your Name in Hangul with Flow and Rhythm
Write your name in Hangul using brushes, ink, and hanji paper in this 90-minute calligraphy workshop.
In this 90-minute workshop, participants will use calligraphy brushes, ink, and hanji paper to write their names in Hangul. Because Hangul is based on sound, names from many different languages can be written in Hangul according to how they are pronounced. Participants will see how their names look in Hangul and experience the rhythm of Korean writing through brush movement and repetition. Participants can get help writing their names in Hangul along the way. We will begin with simple brush exercises on hanji paper. Participants will practice moving the whole arm, changing the pressure and speed of the brush, and making different kinds of lines. They will then write their names several times, following the movement and rhythm of each brushstroke. At the end of the workshop, participants will write their names on a hanji fan. No previous calligraphy or Korean language experience is needed. Instructor: Sang-ah Choi. Materials: All materials will be provided, including calligraphy brushes, ink, hanji paper, and one hanji fan for each participant. Duration: 90 minutes
