Don't Get Scammed This Holiday Season at Rinconada Library

Hear library staff break down the warning signs of holiday shopping scams before you click buy.

Online holiday shopping is convenient, but scammers are counting on you to be busy, rushed, and hunting for a good deal. As more of us turn to online shopping and charitable giving this time of year, fraudsters are getting better at looking legitimate. How can you tell if that website is a real store? Is that unbelievable social media deal actually a bargain, or a trap? And when you donate to a cause, how do you know your gift is going where you intended? Join us for a practical presentation that will help you shop and give with confidence. You'll learn how to: Verify that an online store is legitimate before you enter your credit card number; read and understand product reviews, including how to spot fake or paid reviews; recognize counterfeit and nonexistent products advertised on social media; identify charity scams and make sure your donations reach the people and organizations you want to help. You'll leave with simple tips and a few trusted resources to help you stay safe shopping for the holidays and beyond. Keep these tips on hand all season long. Whether you're a seasoned online shopper or just getting started, this program will help you protect your money, your personal information, and your holiday spirit. Bring your questions and your own stories. Your experience might help a neighbor avoid a scam too! Registration is recommended but NOT required. Register in order to receive a reminder email the day before the event.
