On August 19, 2004, Google held its IPO on NASDAQ at $85 per share, valuing the company at $23 billion. Larry Page and Sergey Brin had founded the company six years earlier in a Menlo Park garage, moved to Mountain View, and turned a PhD research project into the world's dominant search engine. The IPO made Google's founders and early employees instantly wealthy — and funded the infrastructure that would soon include Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, and Android. At the time, $85 seemed like a lot. Two splits later — 2-for-1 in April 2014, which created the non-voting Class C shares, and 20-for-1 in July 2022 — that one IPO share has become 40. Google now sits under Alphabet, still headquartered in Mountain View, with more than 180,000 employees — and it all started with two Stanford grad students arguing about how to rank web pages.
