South Bay Today field guide for Friday, July 10, 2026
Mostly sunny and topping out around 80, the kind of Friday that pays off if you get outside early and stay out late. The night is stacked with free music (In Living Color on the Mountain View plaza, The Megatones in a Santa Clara park) and San Jose leans into an art opening, live Irish rock, and standup. Daytime brings a Spain vs Belgium World Cup quarterfinal watch party in Santa Clara with free food and kids' clinics.

Apple · 2008 · Cupertino
On July 10, 2008, Apple launched the App Store alongside iPhone OS 2.0 — and within 24 hours, 10 million apps had been downloaded. Steve Jobs had been skeptical at first; the original iPhone shipped with no third-party apps. But developers pushed, Phil Schiller championed the idea, and Cupertino relented. The App Store changed what software distribution meant: no retail shelf space, no publisher gatekeeping, just a developer account and a good idea. The first week saw apps like AIM, Loopt, and dozens of games. By 2024, the App Store had paid out over $320 billion to developers worldwide. The app economy — which now employs millions of people — was born from a decision made on Apple's Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino.
