Tesla Motors was incorporated July 1, 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, two Silicon Valley engineers who believed electric cars didn't have to be slow or ugly. Elon Musk led the Series A round in 2004 and became chairman. The company's engineering center at 3500 Deer Creek Road in Palo Alto became its beating heart — where the Model S, Model 3, and Autopilot were developed. The Roadster debuted in 2008. The Model S launched in 2012. The Model 3 became the world's best-selling electric car. Tesla didn't just build EVs — it forced every legacy automaker on the planet to go electric. The company that started that transformation called Palo Alto home for nearly two decades.
